Be Careful Using Twitter – Top Football Recruit Dropped by U of M after Twitter Scandal

Rivals.com is reporting the fate of one of the country’s top football recruits after offensive tweets were found on his Twitter account.

This situation has reportedly cost him his scholarship offer to the University of Michigan.

While this is football, it obviously has relevance to high school baseball players as well. Players and families need to give serious consideration to how social media likes Twitter and Facebook are used.

Nate Stegman of Gull Lake to play at Eastern Kentucky University in 2013

Nate Stegman, a right handed pitcher for the Blue Devils of Gull Lake High School, has chosen to continue his education and baseball career at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, Kentucky.

Dylan VanPutten, a senior at Middleville’s Thornapple Kellogg High School, has decided to continue his education and play baseball at Central Michigan University.

“I chose CMU because I thought it was the best fit for me both academically and athletically”, VanPutten told West Michigan High School Baseball.

Marquise Gill, one of West Michigan’s top infielders, has signed to continue his education and play baseball for Eastern Michigan University.

Gill, who played for Middleville prior to moving to Paw Paw in his junior year, plays summer baseball for Matt Sheets at Around the Horn in Kalamazoo.

Blake Hibbits of Hudsonville goes to Samford to play Basketball and Baseball

Blake Hibbits

Blake Hibbits, an outstanding basketball and baseball player for Hudsonville, will be playing both sports in Birmingham, Alabama next fall when he joins Samford University.

Samford is a D1 university that plays in the Southern Conference with other great baseball programs like Georgia Southern, College of Charleston and Appalachian State.

Spencer Goebel, a top RHP from Northpointe Christian will continue his education and play baseball at Spring Arbor University next fall.

Goebel, who will play for Jim Abbott’s top 18U team out of Elite Baseball this summer, will be joining one of the best baseball programs in Michigan when he plays for the Cougars.

Kurt Hoekstra of Grand Rapids Christian will be continuing his education and playing baseball for Western Michigan University next fall.

With the signing of Shain Showers (Rockford) to Evansville in the Missouri Valley Conference, a few readers have questioned why a player of that caliber would head to Evansville instead of better known schools.

The answer (as Shain is quoted as saying in the Grand Rapids Press) is because of the quality of the competition Evansville faces.

Jonah Lakatos doesn’t think being a late bloomer will be a hindrance to his college baseball career.

The Forest Hills Central senior spent his first two varsity seasons behind the plate as a catcher and much of his junior season in the outfield.

Rockford shortstop Shain Showers commits to Evansville for baseball

Shain Showers remembers tossing around “what ifs” with two of his Rockford teammates in terms of their futures in baseball.

Showers said he and senior teammates Drew Farmer and Tony DiLeo all concluded that playing NCAA Division I was their ultimate goal.

After Farmer verbally committed to Western Michigan and DiLeo did the same to Eastern Michigan, that left only Showers, the Rams shortstop, with an undetermined college future.

Coopersville’s Derek Nietering is playing for Florida Christian College

Derek Nietering, a 2011 Player to Watch on West Michigan High School Baseball, is playing college ball for Florida Christian College.

Florida Christian is a four-year college located in Kissimmee, Florida and competes in NCCAA DII.

Nietering, one of West Michigan’s top catchers the last few years, competed on the USSSA 18U National team this summer.

This team won the Gold Medal games in Florida, going 7-1 with wins over teams from Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Canada, Mexico and France.
