West Michigan Top 10 (5/2/10)

As the season progresses, some teams are showing why they belong in the Top 10 while others are making it difficult to keep them in the Top 10. There are plenty of good teams, but when accounting for the level of play and the competition they are facing, we have to pick who we feel are the best 10 teams as of right now.

There are no changes this week in numbers 1 through 6.

Forest Hills Eastern moves up to #7. Grand Rapids Christian debuts at #8. West Catholic, debuts at #9.

Hudsonville, after two losses to a good Metro Detroit area team in Hartland on Saturday, drops to #10.

Traverse City Central
drops out after a no-hit loss to Jenison. Harper Creek drops out after losing twice this week.

Here’s our latest rankings of the top teams in West Michigan High School Baseball!

  1. Portage Northern
18-0-1 and ranked #1 in the D1 Coaches Poll and #10 in the Midwest by USA Today.

  2. Portage Central
14-1 with only loss coming at the hands of # 6 St. Joseph.

  3. Forest Hills Central
13-1, ranked #2 in D1. Found the bats to go with the pitching and are on a 4-game mercy streak.

  4. Grand Ledge
16-0, continuing to win after getting Coach O’Keefe’s 1000th victory a week ago.

  5. Hamilton
14-2 and sitting alone atop the OK Green standings

  6. St. Joseph
13-3 with a loss to a top Indiana team this week

  7. Forest Hills Eastern
With Wilkerson, Westdorp and McCready they have the pitching to keep winning.

  8. Grand Rapids Christian
9-1 with only loss to D1 #4 Bay City Western.

  9. West Catholic
Off to a blazing start at 14-1 with only loss coming from Grand Rapids Christian

  10. Hudsonville
Beat a good Jenison team twice, but lost twice to Hartland

Middleville is OK, but has lost 5 times I think including 2 of 3 to South Christian and mercys by Hamilton, FHC and Catholic Central

Grand Rapids Christian will face a tough EGR team who is currently riding a six game win streak this week in conference play

But think of the wins the middleville has had including a mercy over the defending state champs east grand rapids and they had i think a 4 or 5 game mercy streak. I agree that the south christain games were a disappointment.

Hello??…….EGR 6 game win streak in conference play? Their conference record shows they have only played 3 conference games?

I think the person meant EGR is on a six game winning streak AND that GR Christian plays them in conference games. Not that the streak is in conference play.

Both are good teams and it will be a good series to watch. Dh on Tuesday and single on Thursday.

Then, Christian goes to Hudsonville on Friday and plays 2 on Saturday in the Eagle Invite – not an easy week for the Eagles!

EGR plays Tri County on Friday, then West Catholic and Catholic Central on Saturday.

A lot of games in a short window – we’ll see who has pitching depth I think!

Sorry for the delay – the site has been down all morning!

I will be in Muskegon for FHC vs. Mona Shores this afternoon. I keep the scorebook for FHC so I am at all of their games.
