2011 Players to Watch: Kyle Zimmerman

Kyle Zimmerman of Frankfort is well known to the readers of West Michigan High School Baseball.

The lefty pitcher/infielder, though playing in a small Division 4 school, is considered one of the top players in Michigan.

Zimmerman was been named to the D4 All-State First Team as a sophomore and a junior, while earning second team honors as a freshman.

In the winter of 2010, Louisville Slugger named Zimmerman to it’s Pre-Season All-American Team – making him one of only two Michigan players named to the first team.

Zimmerman has virtually re-written the record book at Frankfort including a career record of 37-6 on the mound with a 0.53 ERA and 427 strikeouts.

His career batting average is .477 and he has 119 stolen bases. His career home run total of 21 is also a school record.

An outstanding year statistically in 2010 helped garner even more recruiting attention:

143 K’s in 71 innings while walking just 18 and a record of 10-3-1 and an ERA of 0.34 was impressive enough to attract attention from schools such as Michigan, Michigan State, Kentucky, Stanford and Central Michigan.

He also threw the second perfect game of his career in early April.

However, his offensive stats show a player that can go both ways on the field:

He hit .505, with 9 HR, 2 Triples, 7 Doubles and 39 Walks. He also stole 43 bases while only striking out 4 times.

When Wayne State University head coach, Ryan Kelley came calling, Zimmerman was ready to commit to the school that sees him as one of their top recruits – and will offer him the opportunity to both pitch and play first base.

While all of the above tells the story of a great high school career – one goal remains to be met: a State Championship!

Frankfort has won the Regional Title all 3 years of Zimmerman’s career – including 2010 when the Panthers started 2 freshman, 2 sophomores and no seniors!

Returning all their starters for 2011 should make Frankfort one of the favorites for the Division 4 State Championship – which will be a nice cap to Kyle Zimmerman’s great career!
