Recommended Reading: Odd Man Out

One of the most enjoyable books about Minor League Baseball that I have read in awhile, “Odd Man Out: A Year on the Mound with a Minor League Misfit” (by Matt McCarthy) is a must read for any baseball fan!

If any baseball fan still thinks that life in the Minor Leagues is glamorous – this book will set you straight!

It’s a collection of stories and anecdotes from McCarthy’s one season in professional baseball – the only season he played – that would seem to come from a more seasoned veteran.

McCarthy was drafted in 2002 by the California Angels after graduating from Yale University.

He holds nothing back (except some names that he changed) while relating what life is really like in the Minors.

It includes some great insights into the differences between American and Hispanic players, the constant grind of travel, cheap food and cheaper hotels and the culture shock he faces while spending his season in Provo, Utah.

Some of his stories border on obscene while some are just plain funny. In addition, many current Major League players appear in the book, before they made it to to the Big Leagues.

A great book that I found well worth my time – I highly recommend “Odd Man Out”!

You can find this book on Amazon and by purchasing it (or anything), you will be supporting West Michigan High School Baseball!
