Tyler Baker heads into his Senior season at Grand Ledge as one of the top players in the state.
Baker has been on the varsity team since his Freshman season – a not too common occurrence at this top baseball school.
Baker responded by posting a strong season and earning All-Conference honors as a shortstop.
He followed that up with another All-Conference season as a Sophomore – this time as a first baseman.
Baker’s Junior season was nothing short of spectacular as he put up some incredible numbers!
He hit .545, Slugged .871 and had an On-Base% of .669 last year.
Baker’s performance last season earned him All-Conference, All-Area Dream Team, All-District, All-Region (Baseball and Academic), and Division I All-State Second Team honors.
Few people knew that Baker played last season with the added pressure of being named a Perfect Game Pre-Season All-American Honorable Mention – a list that included just a few other Michigan players.
His 72 hits was just 8 hits short of the all-time state record – and will land him in the record books.
Baker will likely make the record book in several other categories after his Senior season.
He needs just 30 runs to make the career runs list, 49 hits for the career hits list, 16 doubles for the career doubles list, 12 home runs for the career home runs list and 32 more RBI’s to make that career list.
In addition, if Baker can raise his career batting average by .018 – he will make that career list as well.
Baker has been a big part of the success that Grand Ledge has experienced the past three years as the team has gone 101 – 10 during his career.
During his Junior season, Baker went 8 for 12 in the Districts with 2 HR’s to help lead the Comets to the District Title and went 4 for 4 in the Diamond Classic championship game to help the Comets take that title, too.
A versatile player in the field, Baker played 1B, SS, 3B, OF and pitched for the top Diamonds 18U team coached by Billy Peterson this summer.
This team featured several other West Michigan High School Baseball “2011 Players to Watch” including Ryan Elble, Robby Enslen and Mitchell Patterson.
Baker is getting lots of looks from Division I colleges as well as many smaller schools. Watch for his decision soon as one of these colleges lands a great player!
