Colin Brand is playing a major role in the resurgence of the baseball program at Forest Hills Northern.
A starter since his Freshman season, the middle infielder displays his leadership abilities on the playing field.
Former summer coach, and current Head Coach at FHN, Dane Wysocki says:
“Colin has been an integral part of the Forest Hills Northern baseball program since he was a starter as a freshman. He continues to be among the team leaders in hits, extra base hits, batting average, runs scored and stolen bases every season”.
“Defensively, he is incredibly versatile, possessing soft hands, a quick release and great instincts which make his range even greater. Colin made all conference as a junior because of his ability to play shortstop, second, center field, and pitch. He does whatever is asked of him”.
“Colin has all the tools to play at the next level and we are counting on him to have an outstanding senior year at Forest Hills Northern.”
Transitioning from center field to the infield two years ago has proven to be a good decision. The move was suggested by his summer travel coaches when they recognized Brand’s quick hands and adept fielding abilities.
College coaches are also taking notice. So far, several Michigan schools including Aquinas College, Davenport University and Hope College are recruiting Brand.
He is also getting serious looks from out-of-state schools including Tiffin University and Heidelberg University in Ohio.
Helping lead the Huskies to a 22-6-2 record in 2010 earned Brand a first team OK Blue All-Conference and All-Area awards.
Brand attributes much of his success to off-season training and playing a competitive summer travel schedule with the top Elite Baseball 18U team under coaches Jim Abbott and Tim MacKinnon.
Over the summer, the team participated in tournaments throughout the Midwest competing against many teams whose players have already completed a year at the college level.
The hard work off the diamond is also paying dividends as Brand, who hit 2 home runs in tournaments this summer, is showing increased power to go with his ability to hit for average.
Elite’s 18U Head Coach, and former professional player, Jim Abbott says about Brand:
“Colin is a very good middle infielder, with good hands, a quick release and a surprisingly strong arm. Colin can play either side of the second base bag. A perfect one or two hitter for any ball club because of the ability to hit for average, steal bases and he also has the strength to hit the ball gap to gap.”
With continued hard work in the off-season, and successful high school and summer seasons ahead, we look for Colin Brand to reach his goal of playing baseball while continuing his college education.
