2011 Players to Watch: Sam Goldschmeding

Sam Goldschmeding will return this spring as the starting shortstop at Allegan, the position he has held since his Freshman season.

Goldschmeding hit .317 as a Freshman and earned 2nd Team All-Wolverine Conference honors as well as Honorable Mention All-District.

He followed that up with another 2nd Team All-Wolverine Conference and a First Team All-District nod after his Sophomore season.

Last season, as a Junior, Goldschmeding had his best season – hitting .352 and Slugging .523 on way the way to earning Allegan’s MVP Award.

He was also named All-Wolverine First Team and First Team All-District.

Goldschmeding
has also led the Tigers on the mound in both his Sophomore and Junior seasons.

During his Sophomore season, Goldschmeding compiled a 4-1 record with a 1.07 ERA over 43 2/3 innings. He struck out 46 and walked just 5.

In his Junior season, he went 4-4 with a 1.92 ERA over 47 1/3 innings.

His strikeout to walk ratio continued to be excellent as he struck out 52 while walking just 7.

Goldschmeding earns the respect of his teammates on the field and has been a Co-Captain at Allegan in all three of the previous seasons.

After his Sophomore season, Goldschmeding was the starting shortstop for the Elite Rivermen 17U team that played top tournaments throughout Michigan, Ohio and Indiana.

He hit .320 and had an ERA of just 1.42 over 24 2/3 innings while earning a 3-1 record.

He played for Elite’s top 18U team last summer and will be playing for the top 18U Around the Horn team coached by Matt Sheets out of Kalamazoo this coming summer.

As a top student in addition to being a great player, Goldschmeding is drawing the attention of many colleges.

Interested schools in Michigan include Grand Valley State University and Oakland University.

Out of state schools that are recruiting Goldschmeding include Butler University, Dallas Baptist University, Cedarville University, Heidelberg University and Wabash College.

No decision has been made yet, but we expect to see Sam Goldschmeding continuing to excel at the next level in the fall!
