2011 Player to Watch: RJ Flowers

RJ Flowers of Hamilton High School had a tremendous 2010 season.

The middle infielder hit .484 with an On-Base% of .556 and a Slugging Average of .747 for the Hawkeyes.

Hamilton head coach Ken DeGood obviously appreciates what Flowers can do with the bat:

“He can handle the bat well” says DeGood. “He has a lot of pop, but he can also do the other things that make a team successful like bunting and executing the hit-and-run.”

“In addition, he runs well and fields his position well with a lot of range.”

Flowers only struck out 7 times all season while hitting 11 doubles, 2 triples, 3 home runs and driving in 41 runs.

He also scored 30 runs and stole 13 bases while helping lead the Hawkeyes to a 25-5-1 record and an OK Green Conference Championship.

A big game performer, Flowers went 7 for 8 in a tournament at Rockford and went 3 for 4 against powerhouse Mt. Pleasant and their #1 and #2 starters.

Last season against traditional rival Holland Christian, Flowers went 2 for 3 with a home run and 4 RBI’s – this after he was involved in a car accident on the way to the game and missed the warm-ups.

“He has great instincts on the field” says DeGood. “He is simply a very good baseball player and we are looking for great things from him on our team this season”.

Flowers played for Hamilton’s summer team last year and is looking forward to playing college baseball.

Flowers carries a 4.0 grade point average and combined with a 30 on the ACT, he will have ample opportunities to be a scholar-athlete.

He is currently getting recruited by multiple schools including Calvin College, Trine University and Rose-Hulman.

“He is looking at studying Engineering in College and will be a great addition athletically and academically to whatever institution he decides to attend” says DeGood.
