2011 Players to Watch: Caleb Caton

Caleb Caton of Kalamazoo Loy Norrix is one of the top catchers in West Michigan.

A good glove and a great arm helps Caton succeed behind the plate. Last season as a Junior, he threw out 46% of the runners attempting to steal.

His defensive abilities are only outdone by his offensive production.

Last season he hit .467 with 7 home runs and 49 RBI’s.

Caton is a big game performer as well. In a Greater Kalamazoo Tournament game played at Western Michigan University, he hit a home run off the scoreboard while leading his team to a 17-1 victory.

In the MHSAA District Championship, he hit a home run off of the ace for Holt High School – the eventual Regional Champions.

For his performance in high school, Caton was named All-Conference, All-District and All-Area.

He was also named MVP of his Loy Norrix team while setting school records for single season batting average and single season RBI total.

In the summer, Caton plays for Matt Sheets and his top 18U Around the Horn Stampede team in Kalamazoo.

Caleb is a hard working kid who has made a lot of progress in a short while” said Sheets, Around the Horn’s owner and head coach.

“He has only been catching for a couple of years and is now the best catcher in our area.”

Caton’s bat continued to impress this summer as he hit 5 home runs in an 8 game span. Included was an opposite field home run at Michigan State.

His Around the Horn Stampede team also played in tournaments at the University of Michigan, Notre Dame University and Hope College.

Playing in these venues got Caton some serious attention from college coaches this summer.

Now 6 feet and 190 pounds, Caton feels he is the best shape of his career. He has also taken academics seriously, a key to getting a college scholarship.

“I have increased my GPA from a 2.5 to a 3.5 over the course of my high school career”
said Caton.

Caleb has made great changes in his attitude to become highly recruited by many different schools” said Sheets.

Caton is doing all the right things and West Michigan High School Baseball wishes him well as he tries to fulfill his dream of playing college baseball!
