2011 Player to Watch: Zach Fish

Zach Fish of Gull Lake High School is one of the top players in the Midwest, not just in West Michigan.

Playing at the highest level of travel baseball around the country, Fish has made a name for himself as a true “5-Tool” player.

Fish played his freshman and sophomore seasons at Kalamazoo Central, where he earned 2nd Team All-Conference as a freshman and 1st Team All-Conference and All-District as a sophomore.

Prior to his junior year, his family moved to Richland and Fish joined Gull Lake where he immediately made a big impact, helping to lead the Blue Devils to a 30-11 record including Conference and District Championships.

Fish hit .473 with 9 doubles, 4 triples, 12 HRs and 57 RBIs his junior season. He now has 23 total varsity home runs in his career.

His most memorable home run last season was probably a blast off of the Gatorade Michigan Player of the Year Jack Livingston of Portage Northern – a game in which Gull Lake handed the then-nationally ranked (and #1 ranked Michigan team) their first defeat.

Fish hit a home run in all four state tournament games leading up to the Regional loss to Lakeshore – the only game in which he didn’t hit a home run.

Not to be overlooked are Fish’s abilities on the mound. He went 6-1 for the Blue Devils with 6 saves and 53 K’s in 33 innings pitched.

For his efforts, Fish was named All-Conference, All-District, All-Region and 1st Team All-State.

Following his sophomore season, Fish headed to Cincinnati to join the most prestigious summer baseball program in the country – the Midland Redskins.

The Midland Redskins have won three of the last four Connie Mack World Series championships.

While living with a host family, he played for the 16U Midland Braves in 2009.

In 2010, he played for both of the 18U teams out of Midland, splitting time between the Indians and the Redskins.

Among the summer highlights, Fish helped the Indians win the National title in the 18U World Wood Bat Championships in South Carolina.

Exposure across the country in the summer has brought attention to Fish from many top schools and MLB scouts.

Heavily recruited by colleges such as North Carolina, Clemson, Louisville, Mississippi and Tennessee, Fish made an early commitment to the University of Michigan during his junior year.

However, in the middle of another very successful summer, and amid ongoing recruiting efforts by still more schools, Fish de-committed from Michigan and began fielding offers from schools down south.

With a desire to play at the highest college level he could, and preferring a warm weather state that offers more opportunities, in November Fish signed with Oklahoma State University.

His signing with the traditional Big 12 and National power should help Fish in his ultimate goal of playing Major League Baseball.

However, before he heads to Oklahoma State, in fact before the high school season starts, Fish will have the honor of representing Michigan in the 5th Annual Power Showcase: www.power-showcase.com

Many baseball fans know this as the event that helped bring Bryce Harper to national fame.

Congratulations to Zach Fish and we look forward to watching him lead Gull Lake and move on to college baseball!
